Four firemen missed their passage on Ihe Manuka when she sailed yesterday ifternoon. and the vessel had ia bait at Port Chalmers and shin "runners" for the trip to Lyttelton. They wanted " 12 hob a day," it is said, and refused to sign on for less. Mokoia, s.s., from Auckland, berthed at the cross wharf at 10.25 this morning. She will sail on the return trip at 2 p.m. to-morrow. Karamea, s.s., which has been laid up at Port Chalmers since the 16th of last month, sailed this morning for Newcastle to go on the loading berth in Australia for London. OTari, S.S., will have renewed by this evening the steam valve the blowing out of which caused her sailing last Saturday to be postponed. She leaves for Sydneyearly to-morrow morning. Kittawa, s.s., arrived at Port Chalmers this morning from Wellimrton, and after discharging coal into the hulks came up to Dunedin in the afternoon. On completing her discharge she returns to the West Coast direct. Tomoana, s.s., from New York via ports, is expected to leave Lyttelton tomorrow afternoon for Dunedin. The Federal-Houlder-Shire Lino have arranged the following list indicating the projected date of departure of their vessels from New Zealand for West of England ports:—Norfolk, on December 30; Drayton Grange, on January 27 ; Somerset, on February "24; Banffshire, on March 23; Surrey,"on April 20: Dorset, on May 18: Buteshire, oh Julv 15; Norfolk, on Julv 13. The New Zealand Shinning Company have been advised that the Ruahino arrived at Plymouth ys, Tuesday, and that the Kaipara has reached Teneriffe from Port Pirie and Durban. Tt is reported that the contract price-of the Union Company's latest steamer for the Vancouver trade was somewhere about £335,000. The recent increases of the Australian ■wool freights on greasy wool from M to 11-16 d, and of scoured from »fd to 13-16 d, are generally considered locally to be an extreme move, savs a Northern exchange. The New Zealand rates, 5-16 d and fd for . greasy and scoured wool respectively, are, on the other hand, considered unreasonably low. The New Zealand producers have far the best of the bargain. At the inquiry into the stranding of the Knight of St. George at Nukualofa it was found that the stranding was due to an abnormal current from the Bouth-west, where sailing directions indicate an easterly current.
