PRESS CABLE SUBSIDY.
A PAYING INVESTMENT. Press Association.—By Telegraph—Copyright. MELBOURNE, October 4. (Received October 4. at 3,55 a.m.) In the House of Representatives, in reply to a question, the Minister of Estonia! Affairs (Mr Batchelor) stated that £2,156 had been paid to Hie Independent Gable Association. Through the subsidising of Press cahies thoro war-on increase of business over the Pacific oable, the gain to the •Commouwoa Ith, amounting to £2,166 annually. There was also an increase in the postal revenue for the transmission of messages on the land lines. Altogether the Commonwealth got, back about three times the amount, it paid out in tiio way of subsidy. The Federal Government were paying Messrs Burns, Philp, ami Co. £5,520 as subsidy for the New Hebrides mail service.
