WEST HARBOR COUNCIL.

The monthly meeting yesterday evening was attended by Ors Crawley (in the chair), Mitchell, Manrais, Bell, Statham, Trimble, Barker, Grant, Connor, and Blackio. —Correspondence. — From the Mayor (Mr H. E. Moller), stating he was proceeding to Wellington on Harbor Board business. —Received. From S. -G. Smith, complaining that certain insurance risks had been withdrawn from the State Office, which he represented.—Cr Trimble thought all local bodies should place their risks in the Government Insurance Department.—Cr Manrais thought likewise.—Cx Barker moved that the letter be received, and' after a statement was made by the town clerk that course was adopted. From the Rangiora Borough Council advocating conjoint action on the part of local bodies in the direction of establishing a can so rs hip of moving pictures in order to ensure that no objectionable film pictures bo exhibited.—Received. From th? Minister of Public Works stating that the council’s application for a subsidy to improve Roman road, giving access to the scenic reserve near Killarney Township, would be considered when th© current year’s estimates were dealt with. —Received.

From the Tnapeka County Council, advocating that the maintenance of institutions for the treatment of tubercular diseases be wholly borne by the Government.—Cr Manrais said the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board's levies pressed heavily on local bodies, especially in the case of borough councils.—Dr I’lackie said the levy on West Harbor had increased from £BO to £l6O nor annum.—Resolved to do all possible to further the proposal contained in the letter. From Mr E. H. Clark. M.P., in reference to the new post office at Ravens - bourne, and stating that he would use his best endeavors to get the work put in hand at once.—Letter received, and Mr Clark thanked for what he was doing.

From the Alilitary Department, Clanking the council for the proffered us© of tho Coronation Town Hall for tho training of Territorials and senior cadets.—Received.

From the District Railway Engineer stating matter of a_ shelter shed nt Sawyers railway station had been submitted to the head office.—Received.

From the Education Board approving of tho condition limiting the free uso of th© Coronation Hall, St. Leonards, to four occasions anually.—Received. From O. V. Davies, asking that .the council use their influence to get pools of water on the railway property at St. Leonards filled in, as during the hot weather last ,summer the.se pools produced millions of mosquitoes.—Crs Trimble and Statham said the mosquitoes were a nuisance, and suggested that, tho matter of filling in bo referred to the. Works Committee,—On tho motion of Cr Blackio the clerk was instructed to rusk the. Railway Department to fill in the pools, i —Reports.—

The Works Committee reported that Surfaceman Withers had been employed for fivo days in Ravcmsbourne. 16 days in Rothesay, and three days in St. Leonards attending to footpaths and water tabler. The footpaths in Ra.venslxn.mio and Rothesay Wards had received a good coating of gravel. Surfaceman Courts had worked on© day in Eavensbourno. seven days in Rothesay, and five and a-hnlf days at St. Leonards, attending to footpaths, and water tables. Gum trees were being cut down at Burkes.—Cr Blackie, in reply to queries, eakl that no more of the gum trees wot© to bo cut down at present.— Adopted.

The Finance Committee, reported that accounts amounting to £lO5 13s had been passed for payment, and receipts totalled £BS 10s sd.—Adopted. The Water Committee reported that the agreement with the City Corporation in respect to the proposed water supply was ready for the signatures of the mayor, engineer, and chairman of the Water Committee. The engineer was talcing levels, and everything was expected to be fixed up within the next week,—Adopted. —General.— It was resolved that the matter of the revaluation of the borough bo referred to the member for the district, with a view to getting the valuation carried out. Messrs A. Boyd and Son’s tender for supplying and delivering on tho Main road to Minn's corner 2jin metal at 4s 9d per yard and Ijlu metal at 5s per yard was accepted, as it was the lowest.
