WHAT NEXT?
The idle rich of Chicago have been made the .subject of a remarkable diatribe in the United States House of Hepresentalives by Mr K. ICbbert Fowler, of Illinois, a Congressman and a member of the Historical Society of that State. Amid the boisterous laughter of his fellow-members Mr Fowler invited tile House to consider the, decadent eonditioti of Chicago, “ the home of the Steel Trust, the Pullman Car Company, the Lumber Trust, and other grinding monopolies and the, idle rich." Mr Fowler proceeded to edify the House with a vivid description of a birthday party he recently attended in South Chicago. He declared that of till the idle rich tlitre, present none ■ had a baby to
show. " Karb of them, however, had a dog." The birthday party was, in fact, given lor a (log. ’I he dogs of iamilies of the, idle rich had all been invited. The dog celebrating its Lirlhay wore a long train, and a big white .nek, trained to act as page, held it up. \ procession was formed in pairs in idmiery of men and women. Someone bsguslerl with the spectacle threw a handed of maize before the duck, which imrne!iately dropped the train and abandoned he job, disarranging the whole programme, in the confusion one of the dogs tripped aid lost a £IO.OOO diamond anklet, which ell among the mal/e which the duck was ■uting. Another dog, forgetting her hobde skirt, hi) sprawling, while the duck [lew away with the diamond anklet to a ndet resting-place in Lake Calumet.”
