UNIVERSITY COUNCIL.
The council of the University of Otago met yesterday afternoon; present—the Rev. A. Cameron (vice-chancellor),'Mr L. Harris, Dr Scott, Dr Church, Mr D. Stewart, Dr Shand. • ■The Finance Committee reported that the- September receipts came to £517 and the- expenditure to £1,450. It was resolved to recommend the council to authorise Dr Inglis to expend up to £6O on chemistry apparatus. The council were also recommended to pay Schlaadt Bros.' account for work dono in the physiology department, also to pay to Professor" Waters the mechanical drawing fees for 1909 and 1911.—Report adopted. One clause in the report referred to the damaging of the induction motor "at the School of Mines. The director reported that on a of the students voluntarily said that he thought he was responsible for the accident, for on Sunday he entered bv a wicdaw to .show a friend the appliances and machinery, and he was afraid hie friend had inadvertently turned on the switch.—lt was decided" to ask the .student to pay the cost of repairs, £lO odd. Ths House Committee recommended the council to accept the tender of K. C. Holmes for £SBB for University drainage, subject to a slight alteration in the position of the outlet drain. The committee had no recommendation to make as to the suggestion to do the Work by day labor.— Adopted. On the motion of Dr Scott it was resolved to rescind the resolution by which a fee was charged for the class iii stomatology. " "TAree applications were received for the position of teaching assistant' to' the pro'-' feseor of surgery, and Dr Xewlands was appointed.
