MINING.

At the Masterton claim the wash, has become poorer, though it is still looking good in places. The blue pug in the top fttrippiiiK is increasing in depth, there being a-s much us 15ft of it across part of tho face. The depth of the ground is from 19ft to 26ft. The master of the Basing Sun dredge reports that indications point to increased returns shortly. Tho master*of the Mystery Flat dredce reports that there was still ;i piece, of solid ground in the eastern portion of the cajt at tho end of last week, but a good deal of worked pound hn<i boon met with. The average depth was 19ft, ot't of which waa wash.

An exaggerated report was current in Milton on Monday to tho effect that the Bruce Gold Dredging Company's dredge at Glenore. had sunk during Saturday night. The report was without foundation. What- did really hapnen. says the ' Broce Herald,' was. that during Saturday, in letting down the ladder when workinyf-at a face, the dredco jerked back suddenly, striking a jagged piece of rock, which strained sonic of the timbers and knocked a small hole in obo of the pontoons. The pumps proved amply sufficient to keep the inflow of water down whilst TopaiTs were being <rfiocted. WAIHI SHARES. Prets Association—By TelegTaph—-Copyright LONDON, October 2. [From Otm Own CoiutEsroNDENT.] On Thursday we experienced a vary cold snap, and the ranges were covered with snow. The nights continue frosty, consequently the river is going down again. The fall of snow was very welcome on the Nevis, where it was pretty thick. The outlook for next summer's water supply is none too bright again this year. The gorge dredges are in full swing again, and both Electrics had good returns. On the Clutha Shine No. 1 had a broken week, as also bad the Rising Sun. The latter has been considerably handicapped by the overburden of 15ft of sandy loam, which hangs in the buckets. However, it is getting shallower, and the good sandstone bottom is making again. There is considerable activity in quartz reefing on the Carrick Range, Mr lies having a big staff of men on. Messrs Evans and Co. espect & good crushing shortly. Work is progressing steadily at the Bendigo mine under the able management of Mr T. Cooper, with the low-level adit. As this is a work of great magnitude, it is only right that it should receive a Government subsidy. The benefit to Cromwell and district when the mine is properly opened up by the low-level adit will be incalculable. I hear that a turn for the better nas taken place in the prospects of the New Luggate Hydraulic Company, and a very satisfactory wash-up is expected in a few diys.
