Detective-sergeant Cornelius told the magistrate that the accused had been in a very good position, and had been the owner of a large house and other property at Maidenhead. Since bar arrest she had helped the police, and goods to the valuo of about £2OO lad been recovered. Witness had seen the Count-ess of Darnley, , one of the ladies who had lost property, j and understood from her that she was | prepared to assist the accused. ] On behalf of the prisoner Mr Curtis Bennett eaid she was married a.% tho early ace of 18 to a man of wealth and position. Six years ago he died, and left her well provided fpr, and with £B,OOO in cash, but, taking the bad advice of certain persons, she hid, to their material advantage, lost .ill her money and been made bankrupt. Left with four children and penniless, she one day took a purse from a counter, and that was the first step to her present position. Sentence was passed u£ Uu»& months in tins second divisioa.
