Tenders for the new building for the South Otago Freezing Company were dealt with by the directors at Balclutha yesterday, that of H. Lyders, Dunedin (£21,230), for a concrete building being accepted. Among the unsuccessful tenders were the following;--- Alexander Bain, £26,078; Watson Rhodes and Son, £23,740; M‘Kinnon and Hamilton. £25,337; Crawford and Watson, £25.558: G. Lawrence and Son. £24,583; G. Hodges, £21.500. The contract provides for the building being completed in time for next fat lamb season. Mr C'obeldick, of Nelson, was appointed clerk of works. The'Huntly correspondent of the ‘Auckland Star’ reports the death at Oparuari of the well-known octogenarian chief Mahutu. The deceased fought through the Waikato war, and was present at the battle of Orakau, holding the rank of sergeant under Tawhana, and was the last of the three fighting chiefs who went through the war.
