Mr Hughes has received the following cable message from Mr Fisher : Stead's report, of his interview with mysolf, as cabled by yon, is grotesque. 1 saw' him for a few minutes hurriedly, and .raid what I have stated hundreds of timer, in public speeches in Australia and the United Kingdom ; that, cur objective was the world s peace, onr policy one of effective defence, and our aim the unify of the Empire, adding that, all these- would bo host attained by trusting to His Majesty’s Governments in the United Kingdom and the Oversea Dev minions to give the best, advice, as the responsible Ministers of a family of nations.
Mr Hughes, commenting on this message, said •when Mr Fisher calls Mr Stead's reported interview “ grotesque" he cramps into one word every epithet of ridicule, denunciation, and contempt that every fair-minded man must feel toward the one who bad vilified him. The attack, however, bub served to heighten Mr Fisher’s reputation, and “amply warranted our expressed belief in the absurdity of such statements as were first attributed to him.”
