THE LOSS OF THE WHANGAKOA. Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. "SYDNEY, July 25. The shipwrecked crew of the Whangaroa have arrived here. They had a trying time. The Whangaroa had got within 200 miles of the New South Wales coast on June 19, when "sales swept over hex and knocked her about in an alarming manner. The deck load of timber was cut adrift, but the vessel was still driven helplessly before the waves, which made a clean breach over her. The crew were working waist deep in water keeping the pumps going, but gradually the vessel settled down waterlogged, the timber cargo keeping her afloat. The only place of safety was the top deck cabin, where the crew crawled and hung on to ropes. The galley was gutted, but the cook managed to save a tin of biscuits and a bag of potatoes, which were the only available food. For nearly a week the crew hung to their trail shelter. The galo was still howling, and for three days rain fell in torrents. When it ceased the water supply failed, and this added to the sufferings of the crew. The Whangaroa was still drifting, and there was no chance to ascertain her position, as all the instruments had been lost. At last the deck cabin was smashed, and the crew were deprived of their only shelter. Just after this Lord Howe Island was sighted, and the men took to a beat, and reached the island in an exhausted condition. SHIPPING TELEGRAMS. LYTTELTON.
