i ii Last night's meeting was attended by the Mayor (Mr Hamel), Crs Matheson, Wilkinson, Black, Washer, Wraight, Sinclair, Masterton, Hendereon, Meggett, "Hayward, and Hooper. —Deputations. A deputation of ratepayers and users of Fifield street drew attention to the insufficient lighting and the disrepair of this street, from which about £IOO in rates was collected annually. It was also pointed out that a crossing was required in the locality.—After the Mayor had explained that £BB had been allocated to works in Fifield street, the matter was referred to the Lighting and Works Committee. Messrs Scoular, N. Lawson, Mustard, and Hoy asked for approval of a proposal to form a new street connecting Roslyn and Mornington between Beta and Gamma 'streets.—Or Washer moved, and Cr. Hayward seconded—"That the road be approved as per drawing submitted," and i this was agreed to, the Mayor alone dissenting. —Reports.— The Works Committee reeommended, inter alia, that the request of the secretary of the Laborers' Union be complied with, [and that the difference, in rate of pay for I hammer and drill men be paid : that the I Wakari School Committee be informed j that paths leading to the school will be [ improved in due course: that the widen- | ing of the Kaikorai road at its junction I with Cv road be placed in its order on j the woi-ks schedule; that the tender of !W. E. Christie for supply of screenings be accepted; that the council sanction an extra crossing at Leven street. It was further reported that tho difference in rate of pay to surfacemen is made in accordance with tho terms of award given to 'the Laborers' Union. —The report was Aadopted, the committee to give an estiijnite of cost of widening of Kaikorai Toad ilat junction with City road, temporary reyief to be given in the meantime. ['.-' The Finance Committee recommended 'that the lew made by the Ocean Beach Woinain Board be passed for payment, and that the sum of £2 be paid on ;u----t-obunt of damatre by in Forth street. 'The overdraft" at the bank was reported as £6,762 13s 3d.-—The Mayor stated that as the rates were coming in the overdraft had been reduced.—Report adopted. The Water Committee recommended that water mains to be laid in Broekvillo Township be put in hand immediately, the bulk of material required being in stock. —General. — A complaint by Mr W. T. Gillespie as to encroachments made on the east side of | Church street, between the Main and School street, was referred to the Works Committee, to report. A number of residents in M'Millan street wrote drawing attention to the state of the footpath and gutters on the north side of the street,—Referred to the Works Committee. Mr W. C Allnutt, head master of the Kaikorai School, wrote offering the cooperation of the school children in treeplanting on August 9.--Referred to inspector to act. Mrs C. Smith and family wrote thanking the council for the sympathy extended in their recent sad bereavement.—-Re-ceived.
