(Received July 22, at 8.45 a.m.) Hiving evidence before the Foodt* Commission, Mr Stead, Naturalist to the Fisheries Department, said that twelve million pounds' weight of fish last year were sent to the Sydney and Newcastle markets. Fishermen were often prevented, in their own interests, from sending fish to market for fear of creating a glut. Shoals of salmon and mnllet were penned up and allowed to escape when the market was not good enough. With better facilities of transit and of distribution the industry was capable of enormous expaneion.
