In the play-off after the tie Harry- Vardon won, doing 35 holes in 145 strokes. A. Massey retired at 34 holes, which had cost him 148 strokes. [James; Baird, of Walton Heath, was the winner last year, which was the jubilee year of the Open Championship, the competition taking place at St. Andrews, when there was a record entry of 210 players. Vardon Last won in 1903, and Massey in 1907.]
