COAL FOR THE GASWORKS
AND HARBOR DUES. A deputation from tho City Council, consisting of Cr White, Cr Sullivan, and Mr Lewin (town clerk), waited on the Harbor Board this afternoon to ask for a reduction in harbor dues on coal for the City gasworks. Cr White (chairman of the Gas Committee) said that tho Council had felt that the due 6 imjiosed upon gasworks coal was excessive when compaied with what- other boards charged. The amount of. coal used by the City Council at the gasworks every year was between 12,000 and 13,000 tons, which meant that the Council wero paying the Board in dues annually the sum of £I,BOO or £1,900. It seemed to him that as they were such .large consumers they might be entitled to some rebate. This was not a selfish policy on the part of the Council, as it was hoped, if the request were granted, a reduction of 3d per I,oooft might be made to consumers.
Cr Sullivan said that last year the Corporation paid the Harbor Board £2,026 by way of the- 3s per ton duos on coal, and in the last three, voars liad paid tlio Board about £6,000. "lie contrasted tho Otago Harbor Board's clues with those paid to the Boards at Lytteltou, Wellington, and Auckland, and said that tho comparison showed Dunedm to 'he at least 100 per cent, more hoavily taxed in this respect than any of the other chief centres. The Chairman promised the deputation that their representations would receive duo consideration.
