THROUGH AFRICA.
» A WOMAN'S JOURNEY FROM CAPE TO CAIRO. Miss Miry Hal], who was the first whit* woman to make the journey from Cape Town to Cairo, gave a lecture in the Early .'•'elders' Hall last night. Nearly all the seats were occupied. Although the greater part of Africa is divided amongst European Powers, the natives ,ire in all stages of development, from the savage to the semi-civilised. Miss Rail's journey, therefore, was attended with a gcod deal of discomfort, and sometimes oven v ith very real danger. Her remarks were illustrated w'fi photographs which she had taken herself. The most interesting part of the journey was that between the Zambesi and Victoria Nyiuuia., and Miss Hall, knowing bow to tell a sl<»ry, skipped over the beginning and end in order to say as much as possible about life in Central Africa. Disclaiming expert knowledge, she said she jn.-t wished to narrate thing 6 as she eaw them, and eo she proceeded, never, however, taking herself so seriously ae to be blind to the humorous side of her flxpeiv ences. Her appearance in some of the remoter parts naturally caused a great deal of interest. Natives trooped out of their villages, prostrated themselves before her, and then followed in procession. Many incidents throwing a sidelight on native character were narrated. At church one Sunday a native entered with a message for the missionary. The good man was engaged in prayer. The native unceremoniously rotieed him from his devotions and delivered the message. Pictures of several fine clnuches were "and they were not expensive," said Miss Hall. The rates of par were as follow: —For skilled labor, from 2s 6d to 10s a month; for unbilled. Id or two yards of calico a month. And bo the story proceeded. Mr J. H. Walker presided.
