IMPERIAL DEFENCE
REPLY TO GENERAL lAN HAMILTON. WHAT LORD ROBERTS WANTS. Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. LONDON, March 30. A book in reply to General Sir lan Hamilton's book on compulsory service and to Viscount Haldane's introduction thereto has been published. It is entitled ' Fallacies and Facts.' Lord Roberts contributes Part 1., which 16 entitled ' The Nation's Peril.' Lord Roberts contends that a fortnight's training yearly until a Territorial reaches the age of fifty is necessary. Ho also urges a reasonable scheme of national service °n the Continental model, to consist of long and short-service armies, which shall furnish a first line of the highest efficiency, and be permanently mobilised. There should, in addition, be a second force, of a mobilisation strength equal to the estimated requirements—viz., 300,000 men immediately available for oversea purposes in any great war. The national militia behind these ought to provide 1.000,000 trained men for home defence, as well as for voluntary expansion to meet their requirements in an oversea struggle.
