OCCUPATIONS OF THE PEOPLE
Fifty-five persons in every hundred in the United Kingdom are "idle." That, of course, includes children, th; aged, and women not definitely engaged in trade or occupation. In Germany the figure is 54, in the United States 62, in France 49. These figures are given in ' Foreign Labor Statistics,' issued by the Board of Trade last month. They are official, but in many cases apply to some years ago. and any comparitwn of the proportion of unemployment, hours of work, and wages in the different countries muct be made with numerous qualifications. But the following shows clearly how the countriea differ as regards the kinds of work undertaken. The table shows the percentage of the total occupied population engaged in groups of trade: U.K. Germany. U.S. Farming 12.6 35.1 35.6 Commerce 11.3 6.3 9.9 Transport 8.2 2.8 5.9 Mines 5.0 3.2 2.0 Iron, etc., works... 7.8 6.9 3.7 Building 6.7 6.9 4.4 Textiles ... ... 6.9 3.7 2.0 Dress 7.2 5.3 4.2 Seventy per cent, of the workers in Hungary are farming, and 41 in France.
