SOMETHING LIKE A GIFT
Notico was recently issued at Barrow that the Duke of Buccleuch and Queensberry had by deed dated December 20 last year transferred his Furness estate to his eldest son, the Earl of Dalkeith, to whom all rents, royalties, etc., are now due. The Duke of Buccleuch is lord of the manor of Barrow, including Walney Island, nine miles king, and a great part of Furness, where there is much iron mining, quarrying, etc. In addition, there is a great amount of property of all kinds. The transference of the Furness estate to the Earl of Dalkeith has a national as well as local interest because of the operations of the Death Duties Act, which stipulates that all gifts of property, etc., made less than three years before death are liable to duty. The Duke, who will be eighty next September, celebrated his golden wedding in November, 1909.
