Knight of the Garter, s.s., came out of dock this forenoon and berthed at "the George street wharf to discharge her cargo, nfter which her survey will bo completed ;-nd tenders called for repairs. Although the repairing of this steamer will be the largest undertaking of its kind in this harbor, and probably in trie Dominion, yet a number of similar jobs of considerable magnitude have been successfully carried out at Port Chalmers. In fact, practically all the extensive ship repairing done in th« Dominion has been carried out there. This is, no doubt, due in some measure to the Dock Trust providing the machinery roquircd for repairing damaged ships, as well as the docks for docking them. The Mapourika has twice had a new hot to >i fitted at Port Chalmers, jobs which called for the exercise of much skill, as the damage sustained was extensive both when she went ashore on Mable Island, near Picton, and also when she was stranded at Greymouth. The Taviuni. prior to her stranding at Westport (which necessitated the fitting of a new stern frame and other repairs) sustained damages that required repairs so extensive as almost to constitute tho fitting of a now bottom. The Tarnwera also had a larige number of plates renewed at Port Chalmers. The RingaTooma. and Takapuna, had their bows severely damaged, and they were repaired at Port, where in addition, to hull repairs numerous rudders have been made and fitted. Tho shipping or unshipping of rudders can now be carried out more expeditiously than hitherto, as tho new dock )8 provided with a rudder-well to facilitate such work, a convenience the old dock never possessed. Port is regarded as having special facilities for the expeditious repairing of damaged ships, and this is no "loubt due, to a considerable extent, to the machine shops, toiler shops, and foundries that are situated closo to the docks. OVERSEA STEAMERS. The New Zealand Shipping Company have received advico that the Rotorua, which left Wellington on January 12, arrived at Plymouth yesterday morning. Another steamer of 9,500 tons carrying capacity has been ordered to be built at Geeetemunde for tho German-Australian Steamship Company. Sho will be a sister ship of one already being built at tho same yard, and is to be delivered in September naxt. It is reported that a contract has been practically arranged between tho British Government and the Royal Mail Steam Packet Company for the maintenance of a fortnightly mail service between Endand and the 'West Indies for £63.000 per annum. Of this amount Trinidad contributes £20,000 a year, and is to become the headquarters of the moil service instead of Barbadoes, as previously. A BTG RUSH AT SYDNEY.
