MR CARNEGIE’S LATEST BENEFACTIONS
Dr Hill, the American Ambassador in Berlin recently assembled a number of English and American newspaper correspondents and made to them the interesting announcement that Mr Andrew Carnegie had established in Germany a “Heroes of Peace Fund," similar to those which he had already set up in the United States, Groat Britain, and France. The sum set apart for the purpose amounts to a quarter of a million sterling, and will bo administered by a commission of twelve members, to bo appointed by the Emperor, who has accepted the office of patron to the foundation. The now fund has been named “The Carnegie Endowment for Life Savors.” That the word “hero” should not occur in the title is probably duo to a desire to spar© military susceptibilities. A considerable portion of the German Press records the endowment without so much as a word of complimentary acknowledgment. The truth is that Mr Carnegie is regarded in certain German quarters as a dangerous man, who himself deluded by visions of eternal peace, is endeavoring to infect the nations with the pernicious doctrine that they would be. better to settle thoir quarrels by the laws of right than by those of might.
