MEETINGS AND SOCIALS

CONGREGATIONAL CONVERSAZIONE.

Tho' Early ScttlenV Hal! last uiglit was a happy place, in which delegates to the Conference of tho Congregational Union and local CongTegationaliste met to spend a pleasant hour or two. Tho tables, which wore provided by the various City and suburban churches, were decorated. This gave the place much brightness. There was a largo attendance, and the Rev. A. E. Hunt was in the chair. After the Rev. W. M. Grant (district chairman) had offered prayer, Mr Hunt oxplained that the object of the gathering was to hear good music and to give visiting delegates and Dunedin frrerads opportunities to become better acquainted with each other.

It had been oxpected that the Hon. G. Fowkta would be present to give an address, but owing to his inability to com© the llov. \V. J. L. Clo.=s (Christcliurclf) took tho leading part as speaker. He concluded an interesting address with an eloquent claim for tho extension of tho principles of Congregationalism. Tho Rev. J. R. Glasson (Wellington) asked the Dunedin Congregationalists to give> effect to their faith by contributing towards starting a church at Alaucrawaf. a locality about eighty miles north of Auckland, in support of which local Congregationalisls had promised to raise from £9O to £IOO per year. Tho Union had been asked to vote £SO.

The appeal was responded to liberally in cash and promises to pay. tho sum of £4O being in sight before the meeting concluded.

Refreshment, which were, supplied by tho ladies, were handed round during the evening, and tho choir (under thogaiddaJice of Mr D. Cooke) contributed musical selections.
