A WAR CONFERENCE. SCHEME OF RAILWAY CONTROL. Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. MELBOURNE, February 15. (Received February 15, at 10 a.m.) The Minister of Defence opened the Commonwealth War Railway Council, consisting'of the military heads and the Commonwealth Consulting Railway Engineer. The object is to consider the qnestion of railways in relation to defence. The, Minister said that if the railways were to bo of any servico in war time he urged that a scheme to so iit them, should be drawn up in times of peace. The Commonwealth had no desire to interfere in the management of the State- railways; all the Government desired was that the question should be eont-idered from a defence point of view. Without mobilisation their troops we.ro merely stationary forces, and for defence they 'would bo useless. Another matter of necessity wan the formation of a railway control staff for war. He hoped fho result of the, conference would bo a real live scheme. Tho Council sits in private.
