ASTRAKHAN, December 9.
De-tails of tin; recent-gale on the Caspian Sea, as a. result of which 514 lives were lost, show that a tenibie stale of affairs existed. Many barges with tugs towing them were driven down tho Volga towards the Caspian. They da.-hed into each other and into icefloes, and soon became mere wrecks, to which the fishermen clung until they wcto overcome by the cold. Two icebreakers and three steamers' crews, showing splendid courage and working in the darkness, rescued 1.000 people. 'The stea-m----ert* continued to battle, amidst the. masses of ice in the Volga, estuary until access to the imprisoned barges was impossible. One-third of the ti.-hemion perished, and the, fishing industry was ruined. One thousand horses and cattle were lost in the Hoods, and hundred.* of dwellings swept (IWIIV.
