GROINS AT ST. CLAIR.

to the Konon, Sir,—l read with interest Mi" Petri's opinions on the alwvc in your ksue of last evening. It appears to me that if his reasoning was at all true there never would have been any necessity to have resorted to "groins'' or anything else, as the sand would have remained in tiie corner. As the wind has always blown in the same way and from the lume direction, yet the sand has all disappeared from the St. Clair end of the Beach and piled u\) at the Lawyer Head end. The fact seems to be that the "groins" are not of suitable censtruction. A great deal is in tho angle, as ulk> the formation. Then the sand pilts up and over one after the other, and, once bedded in, remains, as can be seen in all quarters of the globe. Now, Mr l'etre says : " Tho whole of the sand, or nearly the whole of it, that comes into the St. Clair corner of the beach depends upon the north-east wind blowing it along the foreshore." If this bo so (and I am only a novice), it would appear that the greater portion of the wmd would naturally bo piled up in tho St. Clair end, while the very opjKisite is the fact, as it all gets carriedby the forces of nature to the Lawyer Head end.

The value of the groin is that wind-blown sand settles against any obstacle, piles up, falls over, settles, and remains. Thus the value of the gtoi.n. which could bo used to extend the present beach many hundred* of feet seawards. Such a work, with a wide drive or esplanade along the shore from Lawyer Head to St. Clair, would be a boon to the public.—J am, etc.. CITIZKX. December 8.
