£4O FOR MARRYING

After a critical survey of the 100 applicants for her hand in marriage, Miss Eugenie Adams sifted the number down to ten, who were considered more or less eligible. Theso ton drew lots for precedence in a review before Miss Adams, and the review, the Washington correspondent of the ' Daily Chronicle' states, resulted in the lady selecting Mr Henry Brown, a young shop assistant in Washington. Miss Adams admitted that it was his line, wavy, sandy moustache which captivated her fancy. Ho was recalled, and the others were dismissed. The pair will be made one, and Miss Adams will sail for Germany to claim her inheritance. She will take her marriage certificate with her. but she has assured .Mr Brown that divorce proceedings must be begun on her return. The bridegroom looks at the matter philosophically-, and admits that sentiment does not enter into the matter, which he regards merely as a commercial affair. Miss Adams is entitled to a large legacy when she is married. She does not want a hasband, but she want 3 tho money, and she advertised for a man who would marry her in order to enable her to claim the legacy and allow himself to be divorced when she had received the money. The man's reward was fixed at £4O. The question arises whether Mrs Henry Brown should be granted her divorce. Certainly her assumption that she can is a reflection upon the laws, to , tagr nothing of the morals pi her country.
