Tho verdict of the inquiry into the Whitehaven disaster of last May is that it was due to an explosion of gas and coal dust combined. There was, however, msufiieient evidence, to show that it was due to a defective safety lamp. It wns decided that the dosing of the pit was a rightful expedient, there being no possible means of reaching tho entombed men.
