TAIERI DRAINAGE

The Taieri Drainage Board's meeting at Moegiel to-day was attended by Messrs J. T. Gibson (chairman), 11. A. Kempshell, A. iloynihau, 11. Macandrew, 11. Cullen, N. Reid, and C. Yindlay. MtT. Sonntag appeared to ask the Board to taEe over a drain running through his property at Silverside, and also to raise a bank which had beon washed away.—He was informed that these works had been authorised, but the motion stopping all works prevented them being carried out. The acting engineer (Mr J. Strang) reported on the progress made on works during the month. The permanent gang had been engaged cutting the new drain from Otokia road drain up through Meters Shennan, Gibson, and Crane's properties to Spence's drain; ako completing the erection of bridges across Kirk' 6 xoad drain and the fencing of properties alongside this drain. As instructed at last Board meeting, the gang stopped work on 26th nit. As, however, the present Board were to remain in power meantime, it would be well that the work in West Taieri should be continued, and so get the advantage of the favorabio weather. Besides the work in the upkeep of the drams generally, there arc other works unfinished, including the opening up of the outlet to M'Bride's Creek, Kirk's road drain outlet, Moraona drain, and the completion of the new drain from Otokia to Spence's drain, csatisiactory progress continues to bo made with the contracts in connection with the contour channel. In the eastern division the East Taieri gang also stopped work on the26th ult. The work remaining unfinished i 3 the cleaning out of Messrs Sonntag's drain and the completion of Kenton's drain and lowering of road cuvert. These works should also be gone on with.—lt was resolved to reinstate the permanent' gang in their duties at West Taieri. In the course sf the disenssion it was made clear that the Board existed exactly cm their old footing until the day appointed for the election of the new Board—Mr Findlay dissented from the motion, on the ground that they were practically abolished, as a.
