LAUNCH OF THE WAIREKA

Fully 500 persons assembled yesterday afternoon to see the launching of the Peninsula Ferry Company’s second steamer, the Waireka. The tide being rather poor, oivinjj to the S.W. wind, the workmen lost no tunc in putting in the cradle wedges and knocking out tho keel chocks, and at

a few minutes after four o’clock the ycsscl slid into tho water without the suggestion of a mishap. Mr C. Speight, chairman of the company’s directors, looked after the christening, and got Mrs K. Hudson to break a bottle of New Zealand wine on the

starboard bow as the word was given to “Let liar go." There was no formality cf anv soil beyond this and Mrs Hudson's speech: “Waireka—good hick." The hull was taken in tow and berthed at the Rattray .street whaif to bo lilted for her woik.

Launched. The Waireka has been built by J. M'Gregor and Co., under the supervision of Mr H. MTtac. She is 116 ft 6in long and has a bea.ni of 20ft 6in. To all appearances she is a roomy and safe boat. liverytbing about licr except the electric light plant has lioon made in Otago. The trial trip will bo in about a fortnight.
