REEFTON. December 1. The. trouble at the Waiata gold nine has been settled. It arose over he management d"'sirin.g the men to rt as timekeepers over their own York. The union protested, and the nana •xment gave way, pending legal :dvice.
The Mayor said that- the Valley members were within the Act in voting. He did not say it was right; in fact, he thought it was far from right. Cr Rhodes was the only member of the Valley Ward who refused to vote, leaving the table. Or Clark moved a further amendment that the salarv be £7OO. He said that in spite, of all that had been said, not one argument had been advanced for reduction of "the salary. What they wanted was not a man who'was to provo his worth, but a man whoso worth was already established. Cr M'Pherson seconded, but added that the result was foregone. This amendment also was badly defeated, and the. Finance Committee's recommendation of £6OO was carried.
