At a bye-election for the Dominion Parliament, Mr Gilbert (Nationalist) defeated Mr Perrault (Liberal) for the Athabaska district (Quebec). This is- a blow to Sir Wilfrid Laurier. The campaign issue was " Not a Canadian Navy." Tlio French-Canadians opposed the ' Navy. Sir Wilfrid carried out a strenuous campaign, realising the growing pc-wer of the! Nationalists in French Ca.iada.

The general opinion is that the outlook is bad for Sir Wilfrid Laurier in the Quebec province.
