THE GAME IN SOUTHLAND. [Special ■to the Stah.J INVERCARGILL, November 5. Tho Southland cricket season commenced yesterday afternoon under fair weather conditions, the turf being a little soft and a strong cross wind blowing. Appleby (last season’s premiers) met Invercargill, but are behind on the first innings. Invercargill, hatting first, were disposed of for 111 (Kavanagh 46, Gilbertson 24, and Bannennan 20). Washer took three wickets for 9 runs, and Scott three for 29. Appleby lost three wickets for 1 run, but managed to reach 98 before the innings closed (Irvin 34 ; Walker 29). Banncrnian took six wickets for 44 runs. The other senior match went to Bluff by default, Invercargill Thirteen (colts) not mustering enough men to set (he game going. Tho season promises to bo a good one, and several acquisitions have been made by different clubs. Invercargill C.C. have been strengthened by the inclusion of Kavanagh (late of Dunedin), Williams (Cornwall), and Knapp (Nelson), while a number of lesser lights have also come South. At a meeting of the Soutldand Cricket Association it was decided to enter a team for tho Lord Hawke shield tournament, and will probably play one or two of the associations taking part in it. Representative matches will also be played in Invercargill against Canterbury and Otago (in February). The Canterbury Association have suited their willingness to rend down a team about Christmas or New Year to plav tho return match, which has been owing for the past sixteen, years, Southland having visited Christchurch in 1894. NOTES BY “ ONLOOKER." West CluLstchurch were dismissed twice by St. Albans, their totals being 51 and 72. “West” included Lusk and D. Reese, two New Zealand reps. Young Sandeman was the main factor in the rout. Ho took four wickets for 14 runs, and live for 31. A remarkable performance was registered for Paddington 11. and Sydney 11. recently by one W. R. Iredale. He scored SO out’of 128, the next score being Pope's 9. With the test matches against tho .South Africans so near at hand, the following clippings from a Sydney paper anent performances of probable Australian Eleven players <m u recent Saturday arc interest-ing*:-'-Macartney bowled much bettei against Wavorley, on. a bowler's wicket, by capturing seven for 29, and having the side in difficulties with his length and break. . . . Armstrong bad some good batting practice agauist Collingwood, and hit up 54 out of 73 in forty minutes, including eight 4’s. W.B.’s (Bardsley) form in this innings was superior to anything I saw from him last season, and was quite a piece of classic batting. . . . Cotter was responsible for more fireworks.
