Our Christchurch correspondent wires : —Dr Thacker has received a letter, dated October 3, from E. Arnst, who wrote from Johannesburg. The letter states that the sculling champion is in good health, and is having a “ good time.” lie had recently been out shooting game, and the captures of his party included a lion and a leopard. Ho arrived back at Livingstone on September 23, thence proceeding to Johannesburg, whore ho had been engaged to give an exhibition of rowing for a largo foe. The New Zealanders in the town turned out in large numbers and gave Him a very warm welcome, and entertained him at a banquet. Anrst stated that several offers had been made to him for rowing exhibitions, and ha intends to try to arrange for these before starting for home about the end of November. Floyd was to leave for Sydney by the first boat. J. Arnst had ridden in a cycle match against Vcntnor on September 17 for a side wager and half the cate, and over, the first two distances had won easily. The champion added that ho greatly enjoyed his trip to Johannesburg, which was immediately preceded by rain, the first he had seen since his arrival in Africa. Dr Thicker says that it is very probable that the champion will arrive at Sydney in time for the Parramatta Hundred.
