THE KAIKORAI BAND.

TO THE EDITOn. Sir, —In your issue of tho 29th appears an appeal to tho public for funds wherewith to supply the Kaikorai Band with a set of new instruments. I fail to see why they should bo singled out for support anymore than our other bands, all of whom have struggled and paid for their instruments without a public subscription. Your remarks as to tho number of rehearsals attended by the Kaikorai may be quite true, but surely they have nob done more than other competing hands, and, besides, it was quite necessary. To my mind the above band have done very well out of the public. Did not the expenses to Ballarat come from tho public? Your correspondent “Lover of Music” goes pretty strong on tho fact that Kaikorai won the discipline prize. 1 think tho local bands should have been disqualified from competing, as it was not fair to the visiting bandsmen. Finally, I cannot seo where the Kaikorai Band have merited a public subscription when the other local bands have done as much for charity and public, and perhaps are in a worse plight financially than the Kaikorai.—l am, etc., Music. October 51

[lf any other band can show the same position—ineffective instruments, a try to got new ones, bad luck and a loss of money, and a reasonable aspiration to the championship—by all means let its case be stated too. Meanwhile, no jealousy should spoil Kaikorai’s appeal.—Ed E.S.]"
