UNIVERSITY COUNCIL

The ordinary meeting of the Otago Uhlversity Council was held yesterday, a week ahead of the usual time; present—tho Vice-Chancellor (Rev. A. Cameron), Mr John Roberts, Mr D. Stewart, Mr J. If. Walker, Mr L. Harris, and Dr Church.

Professor Richards wrote withdrawing his application for an assistant. Tho Professorial Board asked that cither a member or a committee be appointed to approve the award of certain scholarships and prizes.—Dr Church and Mr Harris were empowered to act. Word was received that tho for the Dental School had been shipped from England. . The Vice-Chancellor reported tnat Dr Black thanked the Council for agreeing to his retirement in 1912. _ r Professor Gilray’s requisition lor books having been approved by the \ ice-Chancel-lor in conjunction with the chairman of the Professorial Board, it was agreed to send for the books.

Mr B. Gilkison, president of the Astronomical Society, asked the Council to permit the summit of Tanna Hill to bo used for a temporary observatory. —Hi is was agreed to, and it was also agreed to lend the society the Beverly telescope. The Council directed tho registrar to forward a letter of condolence to the widow of Mr E. Jennings, taxidermist, and the House and Museum Committee were instructed to take steps to appoint a successor to Mr Jennings. Dr J. H. Scott asked that tho registrar should apply to tho Hospital Committee of the Charitable Aid Board to make tho following appointments : —As honorary physician, whoever is appointed to conduct Dr Colqnhoun’s classes next winter; as honorary surgeon, Dr Barnett; as honorary gynecologist. Dr Riley; as tutor in gyntccology, Dr Ritchie; as honorary ophthalnologist, Dr Lindo Ferguson; as honorary pathologist. Dr Roberts. Dr Scott also asked that application be made to the Committee in change of the Maternity Hospital in Forth street to appoint Dr Riley as physician in charge, and Dr Ritchie as tutor. —Agreed to make these applications.
