PALMERSTON NOTES
Mr W. J- Lory, who has been appointed auctioneer for Dalgety and Co. at Oamaru, and who for the past four years has been the local agent for that company at Palmerston, was entertained at a smoke social tendered by the townspeople and the farmers of the district. The social was held in the spacious dining room of the North-western Hotel, and was the most representative of its kind held in the district for many yoa s. Mr E. R. Jeffreys (Mount Royal Station) presided. Several toasts having been honored, the chairman, on behalf of the farmers and townspeople, presented Mr Lory with a gold chain and sovereign case, suitably inscribed. The recipient’s health was then drank amidst cheers for himself and Mrs Lory. Mr Lory feelingly replied. Many toasts, songs, and recitations made up a most enjoyable evening. The enthusiasm of the gathering was a just tribute to a gentleman whose sterling qualities are recognised throughout the district.
The Waitaki County Council are erecting a bridge over the creek which crosses the Main road near Kartigi. This should be good news for motorists and cyclists, as the Kartigi Creek has for many years past been a bugbear to the motorman, who not infrequently is obliged to make an enforced sojourn in its sandy bed. The continued dry weather and persistent high winds are daily lessening the chance of a good fanning season. The grass is fast disappearing, and the crops are making no headway. Over-stocked farmers will very shortly,, unless a change for the better sets in, have to face a low stock market. The annual meeting of the Dunback Caledonian Society was held on Saturday evening last. The report presented by the retiring Committee showed that the society had experienced a successful year. The balance-sheet showed a credit of £ls 17s. The following officers were elected: — President, Mr F. W. Venn; vice-presi-dents—Messrs J. Chapman, A. M'Lerman, J. Brander, T. M‘Lay, J. Ritchie, J. M'Kenzie, and A. Murray; secretary, A. Kennedy, jun.; treasurer, D. M. Philip. It was decided to hold the annual gathering on Boxing Day, the sports to be open to unregistered competitors. A vote of thanks to the retiring officers for their past services was carried with acclamation.— Own correspondent; October 3L
