A trust proposes to acquire the Mercantile Bank assets for, inter alia, £24,086 sterling, payable by the issue to the Mercantile Bank of 120,350 trust shares. This will permit the distribution of nine fullypaid 4s shares for each pound share. The trust also proposes to issue by way of dividend new debenture stock representing to a considerable extent the difference between the trust’s share capital and the value of its assets after the Mercantile absorption. Bank of England returns show the stock of gold coin and bullion to be £40,163,000; reserve, £31,263,000; proportion of reserve to liabilities, 50.52. The notes in circulation total £28,560,000 : public deposits, £19,518,000; other deposits, £42,576,000; Government securities, £30,904,000. The Bank rate of discount is 3 per cent. Short loans aro discounted at 1| per cent., and three months’ bills as follows :—London, 2 1-16 per cent.; Paris, 2g per cent.; Berlin, 3j per cent. The American market is still influenced by fears of a drought in the North-west, and buyers are somewhat cautious, as the European prospects continue good. Australian cargoes havo been sold at 34s 6d, 34s 9d, three at 355, and another at 34s 9d. Holders are asking 53s 6d for Now Zealand May shipment. There is fair inquiry for parcels of South Australian afloat at 34s 6d. New South Wales nearly due is quoted at 545. Australian spot is in small supply, and is quoted at 36s 6d.

Flour : Australian is in bettor demand. Parcels on passage, 24s 6d to 24s 9d. Oats : The market is quiet. New Zealand are unchanged ; La Plata, July-August shipment, 13s 3d. —Butter.— Colonial is neglected, and prices are nominally unchanged. The arrivals havo been mostly stored. Danish is slightly easier at 113s to 115s. Siberian is arriving largely; choicest, 96s to 100s. —Metals.— Copper : Spot, £53 8s 9d ; three months, £54 Is 3d; electrolytic, £57. Tin : Spot, £l4B 13s 9d ; throe months, £149 16s 3d. Pig iron, 48s 9d. Spelter, £22 7s 6d.
