OTAGO UNIVERSITY

Tile following are tho material parts of the annual report of the Professorial Board on the past year’s academic work: — Number of students—Slake 298, females 125; total, 421. Matriculated students—Males 250, femaks 117; total 567. Non-matriculated students—Maks 48, females 6; total, 54. Tho students were distributed among the cl i tie rent Faculties as follows:—Arts and science 294, Medicine 82, Mines 31', Dental 14; total, 421. In the previous academic year there wore 239 students, of whom 301 were matriculated. Of this increase of 82 in the number of students, tho Faculty of Arts and Science is responsible for 64 and the Faculty ol Mines for 17. —Results.— In the examinations for degrees held within tho Dominion and without the Otago University students liave had greater success than in a large number of years back, i he number of degrees conferred is 49, as against 38 in tho previous year. The increase of degrees is almost confined to the bachelors’ decrees, which arc 41 in number, in place of 23 in the previous year. On the other hand, there is a great decrease in tho Masters of Arts degrees with honors. The number is two this year, as against nine in tire previous year. One candidate gained first class honors in two subjects, a resold only twice before obtained by our student, Another gained first class honors in one subjeet and second class honors in another. The results.of the senior scholarship examinations are particularly gratifying. In these competitive examinations, which are of a high standard, candidates from Otago University head the list in seven subject; out of 15, but as in, two cases one candidate is first in two subjects, only five scholars hipa have been awarded. In addition, a candidate headed the list in another subject, but she was not qualified to hold tho scholarship. These very satisfactory results encourage the expectation thait th<i ■honors"list of nest year will be unusually large. The following are the full details Doctor of Medicine: Peter Henry Bade, John Patrick Hastings, Ivan Stuart Wilson. Master of Arts: Herbert Bomford Hughes. It is ••■cgrottable that no candidate offered for tlie New Zealand research scholarship. It appears that the amount offered is wither too small to attract fullyqualified graduates. The first award lias been made of three of the Beverley scholarships, but there is still one f or which no candidates have offered. Another prize will appear in the list for next year., as the secretary of the Nary League informed the Board that Sir James Milk intends to give two scholarships for essays on naval subjects. —Discipline and Social Intercourse.— On tills subject Professor Marshall write:;: “I am glad to be able,to report that the -iisci j line has been well maintained throughout the year, and that the 00-operation of the students with the staff in all matters of discipline has been a satisfactory feature of the year’s work. . . . An important want in university life is largely met by the residential colleges of Selwyn and Knox. Though outside the sphere of control of the University authorities, it is recognised by the staff that .lie social life of the students is much improved by the existence of these important, institutions. In particular, they tend to break down the barriers that have in some measure separated the students of different Faculties.’’ ' '
