WAIKOUAITI NOTES
An accident, which might have had a serious ending, befell Mr Wm. Russell, jun., last Sunday afternoon. Having occasion to call on a friend at the River Station, he essayed to cross the river at) Byrne’s ford. The recent rains had caused a fresh, which swept the horse off its feet, and it disappeared under the water. ' Rising to the surface, Mr Russell grabbed the stirrup leather, which parted front the saddle, but securing the horse’s tail, he was towed down to the lower ford, where he grasped the branch of a willow tree. In his saturated state it was no easy task to gain the bank, but the agility acquired on the football field served him in good stead, and he managed to get ashore. . The many friends of Air G. Carling will regret to hear that he is at present au. inmate of Hie Dunedin. Hospital. The deceased gentleman in his day played a prominent part in the history of Waikouaiti. He was a loyal citizen, and associated himself with anything that pertained to the welfare of the district. He occupied the mavoraJ chair for two years, and was a chairman of directors of the Waifcoiiaiti Dairy Factory. For his bright and genial disposition and his many sterling qualities he was held in great esteem, and a feeling of sadness pervaded tho township when the news was received of his death. A number of local residents journeyed to town to attend the funeral. —■ Own correspondent, July 9.
