BAND CONTESTS
The Wanganui band contest, was continued yesterday. The Quickstep Competition' attracted a record crowd, the gate yielding £350. Twelve kinds too); prrt. ' Wanganui Garrison (285| points; carried off the iirst prize, with Blenheim (285 points) second. The Quartet Competition was won by Nelson, with Wanganui No. 1 second'arid Wanganui No. 2 third. This morning, in bsairti fid weather, tho brass trombone and E flat, tenor horn eoloe werededded. Five competed in the former competition, which was won by L. Holdaway (Blenheim) with 113 point*, H. Birmingham (Wanganui) eoeond with 112, and (Wanganui) third with 110. 0. Hansen (Nelson) won tho horn polo with 115 pom l *- Bowe* (Wanganui Garrison) second with 111, and T. Williams (Gisborne) third with 109. There were thirteen competitor*. The judge remarked in giving his decision on thifi event, that, as in most of tho piece* played during the contest, the cliief fault was in conception. Next year's competition will take place in Palmerston North. At the Ilobart contest in connection with (lie Exhibition now being held there the A grade championship contest test piece •Lortzing' (for which prizes of £175, £75. and £4O were given) resulted :—Derwent Infantrv (505 pointsi ]. Ballarat (303) 2. Senior Cadets (295) 5. llurnie and Ilobart Citv (each 284).
