WHY THE CHANGE?

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —A recent case in the local Police Court, which resulted in tho committal by the magistrate of three young children to the Cavershnin Industrial School, to be brought up in the Roman Catholic form of religion, discloses a rather peculiar slate of affairs. It is a well-known fact that wcll-oquijiped Catholic orphanages exist in the Dominion, and tho local custom hitherto lias been to commit Catholic children to these institutions, particularly to South Dunedin and Nelson. What is’the use of Catholics providing their own orphanages, etc., if Catholic children aro not committed to ’hem? If this is the innovation of a new regulation by the department, then the sooner Catholics wake up th° bettor for the future of (he children. No proper facilities exist at Cavorsliam foi the training of children in tho Catholic faith.—l am, etc., 11. March 16.
