THE NAVY LEAGUE

Yesterday a meeting of tho. Committee of tho Otago branch of the Navy League was attended by Mcssus 11. Cliiohohn (in the chair), James Allen. M.P., W. D. Stewart, W. A." Moore, I*. Coven. J. A. Johnstone, U. It. Ritchie, W. F. Edmond, Colin M.nandrew, J. Jeffery, F. Waite, and M • J. Morrell. It was reported that the sum of £4B los had been collected, and that the hank balance now in hand was £l6l os 2d. Ihe secretary had arranged to visit the .schools and address the pupils on the objects and work of the League. This week the Cavorsham and Albany Street Schools bad been visited.—Mr I’ercival Fenwick, of St. Glnit. had given to the League a £5 5s trophy, consisting of a plate made of copper taken from Nelson's famous ship the Victory, the genuineness of the copper being guaranteed by llis Majesty’s initials, “ F.B..'' engraved thereon. The’plate is offered for competition among the gills' schools and colleges on the same conditions as those for the Fenwick Shield. The Rome office advised that it has decided to publish a quarterly supplement to the ‘Navy,’ adapted to the needs of school _ children, and that supplies will be lorwarded to the secretary fur distribution j among these schools having brandies.—lire information was received with satisfaction, the League having long advocated the issue of some such publication. It was resolved to recommend the adoption of the following amendments of the objects of the League at the next annual meeting:— „ “To extend a welcome to all ships of the c Royal Navy that may visit the Otago Bar- n bor.” and ‘‘To keep before thc_ Dominion the supremo necessity of contributing to a tho defence of the Empire by way of usual subsidy, or otherwise, to the ulnrost extent , ( tho Dominion can reasonably afford.” f, The report of the schools sub-committee p (Messrs Goycn, Morrell, Moore, and the sec- hj rctary). with a view to furthering the in- t lerest. of the schools in the work of the League, was considered. The following recommendations were discussed:— ( (1) That *two prizes ho given to each 1 t of Standards IV., V..
