"A WORD TO THE COUNTRY"
Men. born of tho land that for ages Has been honored whoro freedom was clear. Till your labor wax fat on its wages You shall never be peers of a peer. Where might is, tho right is ; Long purees mako strong swords. Let weakness learn meekness; God save tho House of Lords ! If his grandsire did service in battle, If his grandam was kissed by a king, Must men to my lord be as cattle, Or as apes that ho leads in a siring? To deem so, to dream so, Would bi<l tho world proclaim Tho dastards for bastards. Not heirs of England’s fame. “ But we know, mo beliovo it, wo see it, Force only has power upon earth.” So be it! and over so bo it For souls that aro bestial by birth! Let Prussian with Russian Exchange tho kiss of slaves; But sea-folk, aro free folk By grace of Minds and waves. ■Who aro these, then, that England should hearken. Who rage and wax wroth and grow pale If she turn from the sunsets that darken And her ship for tho morning set sail? Let strangers fear dangers; All know, that hold her dear, Dishonor upon her Can only fall through fear. Men, born of tho landsmen and seamen Who served her with soul and with swords, Sho bids you bo brothers and free men, And lordless, and fearless of lords. She cares not. sho dares not Caro now for gold or stool; Light load her, truth speed her, God save tho common weal! A. C. SwiNuunxi;, 1885.
