STRIKERS WANT A CONFERENCE
WORK GRADUALLY RESUMED,
GOOD CHRISTMAS TRADE.

SYDNEY, December 24. The Strike Congress met again to-day, and endorsed the action of the waterside workers in continuing work. They also carried the following motion:—" That the Congress desire to bring about an honorable settlement of the dispute with the authorities, and that their representatives approach the owners with a view to settling {he trouble by means of an open conference or any other way acceptable to all parties." The Burwood Extended mine, Newcastle, will resume work on Wednesday. Prefer' Mice will- be given to former employees. This mine is outside the vend.
_ Despite the strike, the gloomy forebodings concerning Christmas trade were not realised. Most of the retail businesses declare that a record trade has been put up. CARDINAL MOHAN'S ADVICE. BELIEVES IN STATE OWNERSHIP, SYDNEY. December 27. (Received December 27. at 9.15 a.m.) The weather is fine for the holiday. Cardinal Moran. in the course of "a sermon, said he understood that it was useless for him to appeal to the mine owners, but he appealed to the men to return to work without a day's delay. No doubt at no distant day the mines would be gradually resumed by the State, and the disastrous record of strikes be for ever closed. Mr M'Williams, vice-president of the Colliery Employees' Federation, proceeds to New Zealand on a mission in connection with the strike.
