NEGRO'S REVENGE

In Monroe, Louisiana, on August 24, William Wade, a negro, Km amok on tho principaJ business street with, a doublebarrelled shot gun, shooting first every white man he saw, and then firing indiscriminately. The shots wero returned, and the negro finally fell dead with a bullet through his heart, but not before twenty-nine men. three of them members of his own race,.had been wounded. Two died, and two others are very seriously injured. Wade «was infuriated bocause two- of his friends recently'had been shot by the Monroe policemen. Moreover ho belonged to a secret society of ncroes in Arkansas, which believes m revenging all injuries done to the black race. This society declares that fliere arc 15,000,000 colored people in the United States, and (that they have never had a square deal from, ihe white man and never will, unless 'they are prepared to strike blows on thenown behalf. Tho Arkansas societv resent tho lynching of negroes "as a Southern pastime," and say they are entitled to vote at elections without tho risk of being shot.
