MAORI v. PAKEHA. On Saturday afternoon a return football match between the Port Chalmers citizens and the Otakou Maoris was played at the Hotels, Tho first match had been won by tjie Port team somewhat easily, and tho Maoris, confident of winning on their own ground, challenged the Port to a return game. At 2 p.m. the Port team, accompanied by the Brass Band and a large crowd of followers, embarked for the field of action, and for what was to prove their Waterloo. On arriving at the Heads they were met by the -allant Maori footballers under their chief, Te Auto Taupe. The supporters turned out in true war spirit to witness the contest, and they eagerly urged the Otakou team to victory. The first spell ended without any score. Early in the second, Kelly scored after a pretty bit of passing. Dougherty failed to convert. This stimulated the Maoris, and, coming away with, a rush, their captain scored a great try. The try was converted, and tho Maoris now had a two-points lead. Intimidated by the onslaught, the Port defence now crumbled, and the Maoris, with another charge, swept the pakehas in front of them, and scored another try. The kick failed. The Port now made an effort, and Perry scored a brilliant trv, but just failed to convert. The Port tried to score am.ni, but the Maoris drove them down i 0 a Sreat match ended with the Maoris winning by 8 to 6. The Maori maidens then carried their captain shoulder high from the field amidst a scene of great excitement. Mr W. J. Wilson proved a good referee, his decisions being very popular. In the evening the Port team were entertained at a banquet. The toasts of “ The King,” “ The Port Team,” t ‘ The Referee,” “ The Maori Team,” The Ladies,” and “ T}io Visitors” were honored. Songs were rendered by Messrs Cooper, M'Lennan, R. Mackenzie, Nelson, Tmu Russell, G. Ryan, Tehau, and skinner. Mr W. Mackenzie gave a recitation. Several good hakas were given.
