The Thirteen superstition is the most widespread of all, and it is very seldom that one meets anyone who can justify it out of his own experience. But an American commercial traveller, who refused to be one N of thirteen at dinner the other day at a Fife hotel, and who waited till the other twelve guests had finished their, meal, had something to go on. When the number of his father’s family, including the parents, had reached thirteen, “something happened.” In later life, when he was persuaded to sit down thirteen at table, “something happened” again. It would be objected that something is bound to happen, sooner or later, to one of eleven children, and the thirteen superstition ought to have been finally exploded by the discovery that the only passenger who escaped alive from the wreck ofthc Drummond Castle occupied berth 13.
