PALMERSTON NOTES

The annual horse parade under the auspices of the Palmerston and Waihemo A* and P. Association was held in the show ground on. Monday afternoon, «.n*l attracted a large number of far mere and others interested in blood stock. Thirteen houses were exhibited, the same number aa year. Most of the animala were in. good oonditiou, and they presented a line appearance as they paraded round the ring. The, following were the animals on parade;—Mr (loiighuy’s Prince George, Messrs D. and E. Leievre’e Danger (Signal IL, Mr A. Aitcheson’s Rantin' Willie, Mr J. Clarke’s Royal Pride, Mr J. Chalmer’s Gieu jaoyal, air W. Sutherland’s Derby Winner, Mr 0. O’Neill’s Cadet, Mr VV. White’s Glenkenich’s Pride, Mr J. Hagen’s Gallant .Knight, and Mr j. Ewan’s Agitator. Two thorough-brads were shown—Mr A- S. Orbeh’s Dick Hammerhand and Mr Golightly’s Sham-rock—-and Messrs C. and J, NicoJson exhibited their trotting stallion General Pet.

Work in connection with the Palmerston sanatorium for consumptives will be commenced shortly. MriE Clark, of Palmerston,. was the successful tenderer, the amount being ±3,212. Dr Valintine is making an ettort to have Palmerston sanatorium enlarged, so as to serve the needs of the South Canterbury, Otago, and Southland districts. It tnia were done, a resident medical oiiicer could be maintained at the sanatorium, the cost of treatment would be less, and the patients would receive better attention. Dr Valintine is putting this matter before the various local bodies concerned.

A special meeting of the Palmerston Racing Club was held on Wednesday evening. A proposal from the Waikouaiti Club to have the two clubs amalgamated was declined. The Waikouaiti Ulub offered the use of their course on condition that they received 2 par cent, of the totalisator turnover, the amount to be spent on the improvement of tha 'course. The meeting then adjourned to enable members to inspect a course near the Shag River, offered them by Mr Cochrane. At a meeting held on the following evening it was decided' to accept Mr Cochrane’s offer of the paddock for racing purposes at a rental of £2O per year, with a guarantee of ten years’ tenure. The members who inspected the ground considered that, with an expenditure of £2O or £3O, an excellent course could bo made.—Own Correspondent.
