PUBLIC NOTICES SARDINE PACKING. It would appear that many of the so-called Sardines that find their way to this market are not Sardines at all, but are. pilchards and sprats. So keen has the competition become that many packers, to reduce cost, buy fish caught out of season or fish that has gone slightly off through being kept too long before being preserved. The reader may remember the rancid flavor of some Sardines which upset him, and may be interested to know that this was due to the fact that Cotton Seed Oil has been used for packing the fish In. Unfortunately storekeepers all the world over, In trying to go one better than their competitors, are induced to buy cheap goods, and in catering for this trade many of tiie packers have descended to using Cotton Seed Oil In place of Olive OH, and this toothsome delicacy has suffered in consequence. The largest packers in Scandinavia are Messrs BJELLAND AND CO., who employ 1,000 people in their six factories, and whose output for last season was ten million tins. This firm has built up an enormous business through steadfastly refusing to pack any but the highest grade of Sardines, which are preserved in pure Olive Oil, and by special permission of the late King Oscar they adopted His Majesty’s name as the Trade Mark for their goods. “ KIKC OSCAR” SARDINES may be bought to-day in every store In the Dominion of New Zealand, and we venture to say that once a housekeeper tries this brand she will never again go back to the rancid Cotton Seed Oil variety.
