EARLY SETTLERS.
Tho monthly meeting of the Otago Early Settlers’ Association was held yesterday; present Messrs Donald Held (in the chair), W. Crawley, 0. Duke, F. Somerville, John Dutliic, G. C. Proudfoot (hon. treasurer), J. Wood (secretary), and Dr Will. Votes of thanks were passed as follows : —To Mr W. Chalmers, for eight minors’ rights of the early sixties and for an enlarged photo, of Mr J. W. Allen, photographer, in Dunedin in the early sixties; to MrD. Harris Hastings, for a copy of the programme of proceedings on the occasion of the laying of the foundation stone for the Exhibition, 1889-1890, printed on white satin, and framed ; to Mr A. H. Ross, Manawatu, Wellington, for 114 volumes of the proceedings of Otago Provincial Council, Invercargill Provincial Council, House of Representatives, Legislative Council, and Harbor Board, from 1854 to 1890— a very valuable collection of early records; to Mrs Jolm M’Lean, Orepnki, for book dated 1808, an engraving of tho late Queen Victoria, a hone 'sailmaker’s rubber; to Mrs Hamilton, Palmerston, for one penny, minted in the reign of George HI., a medal won at a Timaru show (won by George Grey Russell’s exhibit), a medal of the opening of the International Exhibition of ISSR modal commemorating the Duke and Duchess of York’s visit, 1901; to J. Niven, for a medal of the International Exhibition, Sydney, Now South Wales, 1879, also a token of 1801; to Mrs George (Matthew's, Hawthorn avenue, Mornington, for a box made by Mr John Hill in the early fifties for Mr George Matthews, as treasurer of the First Church, also a number of sermons in manuscript by the Rev. Thomas Burns, D.D.; to Alex. Brydie, Lawrence, for copy of the conshs of tho Province of Otago, 1854; to the editor of the ‘ Tapanui Courier ’ for a pamphlet relating to the Moa Flat Estate, past and present: to Mr Alex. Millar, Roslyn (Robert Henderson, 1861), for a photo, of a family group; to Mr Peter Dick, for a framed photo, of his father and mother, who arrived by the Alpine on September 12, 1859, as ‘a commemoration of the jubilee of their arrival; to Mr A. R. Falconer, for a “ spinning jenny ” brought out by him from the She.tland Islands in 186.3. Twenty-six new members were proposed. The following deaths wore recorded; —Mr Samuel Brown (63), arrived 1864; Mr F. Collins (75), earlv sixties; Mrs Marpory Leith (95), Marv, 1849; Mrs Mary Sntcliff (85), Ajax, 1859; Mrs Joan APLaren (S3), Silistria, 1860; Mrs Isabella C. APGeorge (74), Rangitoto, 1864; Mrs Annie Hamilton Scott (76), 1864; Mrs Margaret Bremner Pattillo (73), Seville, 1859; Mrs Martha Godso C9O), Orient, 1861; Mrs Mary Parker (83), Alpine, 1859; Mr Alex'. Walker (71), Orient, 1861; Mr W. J. Dyer, 1865; (Mr John Young (Invercargill)! Storm Cloud, I860; Air Henrv W. Dawson (59), Rajah, 1853; Mr John APTavish (53), Gloucester, 1858.
