SALVATION ARMY.
The Salvation Army has given both to the religious and philanthropic worlds many examples of what great things can be done by fixity of purpose and unity of effort, and among them none more striking than its annual week of prayer and selfdenial. The period set apart for this purpose for the present year is from October 9 to 15. In addition to being a great influence for good in this country, the Army is a huge missionary organisation, and with its social and rescue agencies ie operating in no fewer than fifty-four countries and colonies, and preaching the gospel in thirty-one different languages. Its extensive social scheme for the amelioration of the physical needs of the poor and outcast in this country is being carried on with much success in other lands. The resident officer, Adjutant’ Thurkettle, is anxious to come up to past accomplishments with this year’s effort.
